The Lesson In the Quiche
Be open to the possibilities and you just may be surprised at how things turn out!
This is a funny little story and a life lesson all rolled into one!
I’ll admit that I’m a bit of a restaurant snob…I’ve left restaurants many times because I just knew that I wasn’t going to be happy. Just ask my children who are always very embarrassed when this happens!
I have standards for restaurants…with the exception of a good barbecue spot or a crab shack. (I have standards for those too, but they have a specific vibe that I have to make exceptions for!) The interior has to be pretty, the menu has to be interesting with local food and a seasonal menu and it has to be clean (goes without saying right)!
Yesterday, I was in Columbia, SC with my daughter and her family. They wanted to go to the local downtown farmer’s market and I thought that sounded like a great idea! Since the B&B (Chesnut Cottage) where I stay is downtown, I decided to walk and meet them because it was such a beautiful day! The weather was absolutely perfect for a farmer’s market and there were so many people and dogs and kids everywhere!
We smelled fresh flowers, tasted honey, sampled chocolate chip cookies, listened to all kinds of music and after a bit, someone suggested we find a place to sit down and eat. The kids were getting tired and hungry and so was I!
We found a place called The Robinson Room that looked amazing on the outside and after peeking inside, I thought it was cute, but the decor was, IMHO, kind of questionable. Everyone wanted to eat there, so I decided to keep my mouth shut and go with the flow!
We asked to be seated at a table outside so we could people watch and enjoy the live music. As we sat down, I noticed the table was dirty (I thought this was another bad sign but still remained silent) and asked our server to wipe it off, which she quickly did. She then brought us menus and took our drink orders…the wine list was just okay, but I still kept my mouth shut and was trying to be very positive about the experience.
The brunch menu was actually really interesting…very Southern with a lot of local items and so we ordered…
I am not much of an egg lover, but I do enjoy a good piece of quiche if it’s not too eggy (I like lots of other ingredients to mask the egg). I asked our server about it and she said it was a mushroom parmesan quiche and the eggs were the star so I decided against it.
We ended up ordering homemade biscuits with butter and peach preserves, bacon, hash browns, grits, homemade cinnamon rolls and my son-in-law ordered the quiche.
The food was beyond delicious…best grits I’ve ever had and I’ve been eating grits my whole life! The biscuits were delicious fluffy Southern biscuits and the bacon was cooked to perfection. And…the quiche…OMG!!! I had a bite and thought I had died and gone to heaven…I’ve never tasted better quiche! I can’t even explain how amazing this quiche was!
I’m sure that there was something about the method with the eggs…maybe how they were whipped or how it was baked, that made it so silky and light!? I’m determined to figure out how to make this divine quiche!
I just got home and I’ve already been searching my cookbooks for a quiche recipe that will even come close to this one! I’m going to make one for dinner tomorrow night (maybe Mushroom & Parmesan) and I’ll get back to you on how it is! In the meantime, be sure to check out the Recipe Section of Crazy Blonde Life for lots of great fall food inspiration!
So the moral to this story is - be open to the possibilities and you just may be surprised at how things turn out! I’m so glad I kept my mouth shut about the restaurant and I definitely want to go back and eat there next time I’m in Columbia! Life is full of surprises and so I think I’ll even call this the miracle of the perfect quiche?! Why not?
Here are three beautiful French cookbooks I own and use…all of these are beautiful cookbooks that you’ll love having in your collection!
